Professor Anton Schepers

Professor Anton Schepers qualified MB,B.CH(Rand) in 1976, and as a Specialist Orthopaedic Surgeon on the 1st August 1985.
He started Private Practice in 1978, but retained constant contact with the Wits Orthopaedic Department as a part time consultant. He returned to full time practice in 1996 and ran the Joint Replacement Unit from 1997 until he was retired in 2010. During this time he trained many orthopaedic registrars who have entered private practice as joint replacement surgeons both locally and internationally.
He was Acting Head of the Orthopaedic Department from February 2002 to August 2002 and was appointed as Adjunct Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery in March 2004. He was elected as President of the Orthopaedic Association of South Africa in 2001 and served in this capacity until 2003 .He was elected as President of the South African Arthroplasty Association and served as such from 2005 to 2009.
He was elected as President of the College of Orthopaedics within the Colleges of Medicine from 2008 until 2011 and was Editor In Chief of the South African Orthopaedic Journal from 2013 until 2018 .Prof Schepers continued his joint replacement practice at the Wits DGMC in 2010.

After completing his internship and community service in South Africa, Dr Goldstein completed basic surgical training at St Mary's Hospital in London (UK) and became a Member of the RoyalCollege of Surgeons (MRCS). He returned to South Africa to undergo post graduate orthopaedic training, and received the FCS(SA)Ortho qualification with distinction in 2012 (recipient of the JM Edelstein gold medal). After working as a lower limb trauma consultant at Charlotte Maxeke JHB Academic Hospital, Dr Goldstein joined Professor Schepers and underwent a two-year dedicated arthroplasty fellowship.

Having specialised at the University of Witwatersrand, Dr Rymer has been in full-time private practice since 2013. With a special interest in anaesthesia for arthroplasty, he is involved in over 250 arthroplasty procedures per year. Dr Rymer also has interests in ultrasound-guided regional anaesthesia and paediatric anaesthesia.

Dr John Tilley is a specialist physician and intensivist. He is currently the Director of the Medical Intensive Care Unit at the Donald Gordon Medical Centre. Dr Tilley completed his undergraduate degree at Wits University, followed by his specialisation in internal medicine and completed his sub-specialist training in critical care. He has a special interest in clinical informatics and decision support systems.

Michele Carr graduated from UCT in 1993. She has a special interest in Orthopaedics and has completed a post graduate diploma in Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy. There are 7 physiotherapists working with her in the Practice all of whom have an interest in rehabilitation. They are committed to working with the patient to ensure that their road to recovery is as quick and as smooth as possible.

Surgical management- Confirm eligibility for value-based care programme
- Physician assessment (fitness for surgery), routine pathology and additional radiology
- Physiotherapy assessment and prehabilitation (prep before surgery)
- When all parties are happy to proceed, confirm date of surgery and obtain scheme authorisation
- Covid-19 test?
8. Surgical management
Surgical preparation- Stop anti-inflammatories 1 week prior to surgery
- Bath or shower in Hibiscrub (an antiseptic cleanser) the night before admission and the morning of surgery
- Complete pre-operative medical questionnaire
- Anaesthetic assessment
9.Surgical management
Undergo surgery- General anaesthesia combined with morphine spinal
- Primary surgery; surgical time is approximately 1 to 1½ hours (depending on case complexity)
- Revision surgery; variable
10. Surgical management
Post-operative care- Our aim is for you to be mobile and walk as soon as possible (with support from our physiotherapist)
- Analgesia, anti-emetics (pain and nausea relief) and DVT prophylaxis
- Post-operative x-ray
- We aim to discharge you 2 to 3 days post-surgery (for a primary, uncomplicated surgery)
- Wound check approximately 10 days post procedure
11. Surgical management
Post-operative follow-up- Approximately 6 weeks after surgery
- Use of crutches is variable and will be discussed with physiotherapist
- If fit enough driving permitted from 3 weeks
